RYAN KICKED back in his recliner, sighing with fatigue. As usual, he’d run his rear off since he’d come home. Laundry, banking, a special event at a shopping mall, a quick photo shoot for a racing magazine—all by two o’clock in the afternoon. He felt like he’d been through the wringer.

He picked up the remote and clicked on the TV. Channel surfing seemed like a waste of time when his whole career might be in the toilet. To top it off, he couldn’t seem to get Jamie Tanner out of his mind. He hadn’t felt this way about anyone in a long, long time.

He missed her already. He’d been tempted not to call her when there’d been a parts delay, selfishly wanting to see her as soon as possible. But he knew she needed to spend time with her dad, so he’d given her the extra time.

And now he had to wait for the hauler to arrive before he could get elbow deep in the blown engine. His inability to do something, anything, to prepare for Darlington made him restless.

His cell phone rang.

“Hello.”

“Ryan, it’s Jamie.”

“Everything okay? Did you get my message?”

She cleared her throat. “Yes. Dad’s recovery is progressing nicely, but he’s driving my mom nuts. I just wanted to let you know I’m here in Charlotte earlier than I expected.”

“There’s nothing for you to do till this evening.”

“I’d hoped maybe we could scrounge up what we needed to at least get started.”

“Believe me, Bill’s been scrounging his heart out. It’s killing me sitting here on my butt when there’s so much on the line. I’d have called if we could get started.” He’d been tempted to call several times just to talk to her—to hear her voice—but managed to limit it to the one disappointing interaction with her voice mail.

“I know. But it was either come here this afternoon or worry that my mom might shanghai me for the Poultry Princess dinner tonight. She wanted me to extol the virtues of the pageant to a bunch of girls.”

Ryan chuckled. “I can see why you chose Charlotte. Doesn’t seem like your type of thing.”

“Thank you. I think. If it was meant as a compliment.”

Smiling, he said, “It was.”

“Ryan?”

“What?”

“This is probably going to sound unusual, but can I hang out at your shop? Do you have something I could work on? I don’t care what it is as long as there’s internal combustion. Even if it’s your lawnmower.”

“You want to fix my lawnmower?” Now Ryan was intrigued. Jamie was an amazing woman.

“Anything mechanical. I’ve…got a lot on my mind. When I need to think, I fix things.”

“Kind of helps the wheels get turning in your mind?” He leaned back in the recliner. “Frees you from all the outside stuff?”

“Exactly.” She sounded relieved. “I was afraid you’d think I was weird. It used to freak out my boyfriend. We’d fight and I’d head for my workbench in the basement.”

“It sounds like a very sane response to stress. Hey, I’ve got an idea. We have a practice motor that needs some TLC.
